When we think about grooming, most people imagine a haircut or a refreshing bath. But grooming is much more than just aesthetics. More and more professionals are now embracing a broader vision: holistic grooming.
A global vision of animal well-being
The word holistic comes from the Greek holos, meaning “whole.” Applied to grooming, it reflects the idea that we cannot take care of an animal’s coat without considering its body, emotions, and environment.A holistic groomer therefore focuses not only on appearance but on creating a complete well-being experience.
The key principles of holistic grooming
Respect and gentlenessEach session adapts to the animal’s temperament, age, and health condition. Handling is designed to reduce stress and build trust.
A sensory approachGrooming involves all five senses: soothing sounds, natural scents, gentle and precise movements, and pleasant textures. Everything is set up to create a reassuring environment.
Scientific foundationsUnderstanding skin and coat, respecting pH, preserving the skin barrier, and choosing the right techniques are central to this approach.
Natural and responsible productsHolistic grooming favors gentle, effective, and eco-conscious products. Less unnecessary chemicals, more quality and safety.
The groomer’s well-being matters tooHolistic grooming is not only about animals: it also includes the professional’s health by encouraging ergonomic practices, preventing injuries, and promoting serenity at work.
More than a method, a philosophy
Holistic grooming is not a passing trend, but a philosophy of practice. It restores the essential bond between humans and animals, turning grooming into a moment of care, respect, and connection.
This is the vision that the International Grooming Society (IGS) promotes through its training programs, publications, and global community of professionals.
